Question
Hi! Mr. Powers, my name in Melissa and I am asking a question for my boyfriend Travis. He server 4 years with the USMC, did his tour in Iraq and has been home for a little over a year. My question is he is interested in re-enlisting but how does it look with the general discharge. Maybe you can help I know nothing of the subject and I am sure you know how military guys are, they don't ask questions. So help me please!! Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Melissa,

I'm afraid that's not enough information for me to correctly answer the question.

The "General" Discharge is just part of it. That's his awarded "character of service."

I can say that the "General" characterization doesn't look good. It means the commanding officer found some significant problems in the area of conduct and performance with his service (otherwise, he would have gotten an "Honorable" discharge).

But the key, when it comes to possibility for re-enlistment is primarily his "Re-Enlistment Eligibility Code" and the official "Reason for Discharge." Both of these should be listed on his DD Form 214, "Record of Discharge," that he received when he was discharged from the USMC.

Hope this helps!
