Dear Jay --

Although I know some things about the M1 tank and its history, I am not an expert on the tank.  You wouold be better served to write to the Tank and Automotive Command in Warren Michigan for the tank's developmental history.  For its wartime use, any of the armor units could help there.  Try the 1st Armor Division or the 1st Cavalry.
