Question
I want to be a linguist in the navy. How long and how frequent are the deployments for this job, and is it hard to get stationed in San Diego or Hawaii?
Thanks,
Laura

Answer
Hi Laura,

The rating for "Navy Linguist" is "CTI." You can read about the rating (job) on my website at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjob1/a/cti.htm

As it says in the article, CTI's are often assigned to Navy surface ships, submarines, and Navy aircraft. As a female (I assume you're "female," because of your name), you are not eligible to be assigned to a submarine.

If assigned to a ship, you would likely spend about six months out of every year at sea. You would be "assigned" to the base that your ship is "home-stationed" at. I'm afraid I have no information about the chances of being assigned to one home port, over another.

Hope this helps!
