Question
If one was to do ROTC in college and wanted maximum chance to earn an infantry platoon leader assignment, which of Army or Marines would give the best chance for that? Then the followup question, is Army or Marines the best place to serve as an infantry officer if you want to learn from the best?  I am interestd in Army Rangers, Marine Recon, or special forces long term.

Answer
Hi James,

Both the Army and the Marines need infantry officers, so there is not much difference (in chances of being selected as an Infantry Officer) between the two.

In either service, if you volunteer for infantry, your chances of getting it are very, very good (assuming you meet medical qualification factors).

On the Special Operations/Special Forces side of the house, your selection chances would probably be better in the Army. The Army has several special operations options (including Rangers and Special Forces), and the Marine Corps only has one (Recon), and they are a very recent addition to the Spec Ops Command.
