Question
MY marriage will be ended by dissloution of marriage in about 6  months. Once I receive the offical notice from the state that my marriage is over,, in  how many days, months, etc must I report to my command , navy, that I am no longer married?  Being an E-3 in San diego what are the chances I can continue to live off of the ship and receive money from the navy? I plan to remarry, but  we  don';t want to rush this just to keep the money..but I prefer to live offbase..Thanks

Answer
Hi Lucas,

You are required, by regulation (law) to inform your command (personnel) about any change in marital status within a "reasonable" amount of time. While not actually defined, a "reasonable amount of time," is generally considered to be within two weeks of the official change of status, unless there are extenuating circumstances which prohibited you from doing so.

In other words, to be on the "safe side," you need to inform your command within two weeks of receiving the official notification from the state that your marriage has be "disolved." Probably wouldn't hurt for you to "unofficially" inform your supervisor, and/or your section "chief" (the first "chief" in your chain of command), that you will soon have a change in status.

As to the chances that you will continue to be allowed to reside off-base, and receive a housing allowance at the "single rate," I'm afraid I can't answer that. It's entirely up to the individual policy(ies) of your command.

You may wish to make an appointment to speak with your XO (unit "Executive Officer,") who can tell you, straight up, what the policy is in your particular unit.
