Question
QUESTION: Is it possible to get a medical waiver for depression.  I am now 28, when I was 20 a doctor diagnosed me with depression/anxiety.  I was placed on a small dosage of medication.  I do not believe this was an accurate diagnosis and tried several times to get off the medication but when I did it causes severe withdrawal symptoms.  A couple of years ago I discussed this with my new doctor and he agreed that I did not really need the medication and with his help I was able to get off of this medication.  I do not have depression (personally I think this is an over diagnosed condition that is a big cash cow for the pharmaceutical companies).  I in in good shape and now have a bachelors degree.  Other than this mark on my medical record I would be a great candidate for enlistment or OCS.  Is there any chance at all that any branch of service and in particular the following:  Army National Guard, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve, Navy Reserve, would grant me a waiver?

ANSWER: The main problem that youface is the fact that you are still on the medication. I do know that you have to be off the medication for at least two years before the military will even look at an exception to policy. If in fact you know that you can survive with out the medication, then you will have to endure the sideffects of coming off it.

I first would seek a second opinion about your medical history and current situation and then proceed from there.

QUESTION: I am off the medication.  I have been for over a year now, and almost two.  I must not have clarified that in my previous post.  I am off the medication and I am feeling great.  I came on here to check this out before I go into a recruiting office.  If it is an absolute barrier to entry than I will not bother wasting anyones time at a recruiting office.  I have ordered copies of my medical records and have a letter from my doctor stating that I am off the medication and doin well.

Answer
Thanks for clarifying that, Since you ahve been off for two years, then It doesnt hurt to see what you can get. Dont worry about wasting the recruiters time, thats why they are there! Make him or her work for you! Whats the worst they will tell you....No right, but what if? Since you are persuing the reserve or Nat'l guard, the regulations are less stringent than that of the Active sector. Give it a shot....You might be surprised what you come up with...

Merry Christmas...
