Question
my daughter just got medically disqualified because she uses orthotics. 1 leg is less than 1mm shorter than the other. she has no problems doing any physical activities and her podiatrist even stated in a letter that she would do fine in the military without any problems. she also just completed a week at the air force academy summer seminar without any problems with the physical part and was recommended to apply for the academy by her element leader. we have just started the waiver process. What are her chances of obtaining one so that she can attend the air force academy in 2008?

Answer
Dear Cindy --

I cannot promise you anything, but the likelihood of a waiver for orthotic use is very high.  Flat feet, and other minor ailments that are correctable and do not limit the candidate's ability to do military training and a very physical job, are routinely waived.

Good luck to her on her application.
