Question
i received an re-4/kbk discharge after 9 years in the navy.  it was an honorable discharge.  the re-4 was because of prt failures.  i got out in march of 2004.  is there a process i can go through.  i would like to join the reserves after i am done with school.

Answer
Hi Adrian,

An RE Code (Reenlistment Eligibility Code) of "4" generally means one is not eligible to re-enlist (re-enter) the military. Sometimes (although rarely) the military will waiver an RE Code of "4." The Army will waiver these the most often. Chances of a Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Air Force waiver for an RE Code of "4" is rare, unless you have some kind of special skill or training that one of those services desperately need.

Unless you wish to re-enlist in the Army, Army National Guard, or Army Reserves, your only realistic chance is to try and get the RE Code changed in your Military records. Procedures about changing your military records can be read in my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/airforcebase/a/chgrecords.htm

I've got to be honest, however. Your chances of getting this changed are not great, and your chances of going into the Navy or Navy Reserves with an RE Code of "4" are not great.

Look at it from the Navy's point of view: Before they discharge for PRT failure, they give several chances to get into shape and pass the PRT. (From their point of view), you failed to take advantage of those chances. Why (from their point of view), should they take another chance on you?

Not saying you shouldn't try. But, the chances are not very great.
