Question
I was looking at trying to get back in the Navy, I have been retired for 3 years now, after serving 20 years honorable service. I have checked the Internet, asked recruiters, and no one seems to have an idea. I have been working as a counselor in a substance abuse facility and have earned my degree in the years that i have been out of the Navy. Is there any possible way to do a short term enlistment for 2 years

Answer
Hi Wayne,

I'm sorry, but the chances are not good. The Navy only accepts retirees back onto active duty, only if they are currently qualified in a rating (job) that the Navy considers extremely critical. At this point in time, that pretty much means those with a nuclear rating or special operations (SEALS).

Like the Air Force, the Navy is currently undergoing a "down-sizing." Last year, the active duty Navy was authorized 352,700 sailors and officers. By September 30, 2008, the Navy must "downsize" to between 328,400 personnel and 329,098 personnel (see: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/payandbenefits/a/08paychanges_4.htm As such, they are not much interested in bringing retired personnel back onto active duty, unless they are previously qualified in a very, very critically-manned rating.
