Question
I'm in the navy now and they are trying to give me a enlistment code of 4. I thought that was for people that get bad conduct discharges. I am scheduled to get out of the navy this September and they are trying to give me An administrative discharge so i can get out early before my time is up. Is there anyway I can get the Navy to change this  because i want to enlist in a different service. I have been serving my country Honorably for them to try and do this.

Answer
Hi Danny,

Your Reenlistment Eligibility Code (RE Code) is determined by your commanding officer, and is usually based on the official reason for discharge.

The code is not based on the characterization of discharge, but rather on whether or not the person is eligible to re-enlist, based on the reason for separation. I've known people who have received an honorable discharge, with an RE Code of "4" (for examples in cases of serious illness or injury).

You'll have to speak with your commanding officer concerning your RE Code, prior to discharge.

After discharge, the only way to change the RE Code is to apply to have your records changed by the Navy Discharge Review Board or Records Review Board. This process can take several months (see: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/generalinfo/a/dischargeupg.htm and http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/airforcebase/a/chgrecords.htm).
