Question
Hi Rod,
My name is Jennifer. I was in the Navy for four years, I got out and a couple of years later decided to join the national guard. I joined about less then a month ago. I haven't gotten paid for anything, and have not received my bonus. My question is I am really thinking about going to full time active navy again. I wanted to know if you think that is possible and also will it be a smooth transition and about the contract that I signed. I appreciate any help you might have.
Thank you,
Jennifer

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

When you joined the National Guard, you became a *member* of the National Guard. You're committed to them. The only way you can now go back onto the active duty Navy is to apply for a "conditional release." (see my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/guardandreserve/a/reservetransfer.htm).

Generally, before your National Guard unit is even going to consider approving a "conditional release" is after at least six months of service, following basic training and job training.
