Question
My son has 14 years National Guard, one tour in Iraq and is now a 1ST LT.  He wants to get out of the guard before he is called to go to Iraq again; but doesn't want to ask the military.  He is under the impression that he can't get out now and doesn't want it to be in his record that he wants out.  What is the deal.  If he is not currently activated, can he resign or not?

Answer
Ma'am:

Truth be told, I don't really know.  My understanding is that officers can resign their commissions after serving a certain number of years, unless they have other obligations to the Gov't, such as paying back school loans and such.  Either way he does it, he'll HAVE to ask the military, he just can't send in a letter saying "I quit";  the military will have to process him paperwork wise along with a host of other issues.

Again, this is out of my area of expertise, but I'd suggest that he research the regulations pertaining to resignation of his commission and see exactly what he has to do and how he has to do it.  They are available on line and he can access all that stuff through his AKO account.

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
