Question
I am currently an active duty, infantry marine with about a year and a half left on my four year contract. I do not want to re-enlist active duty, but I was wonder if it would be possible to re-enlist in the reserves for 16 years and retire, still getting all the benefits of a retired marine.

Answer
Hi Kevin,

Certainly, except, because most of Reserve system is "part time," rather than full time, the Reserve retirement system works from "points," and not time-in-service. For details, see the article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/reserveretirmentpay/a/reserveretire.htm

Additionally, regardless of when they actually retire, Reserve members do not begin receiving retirement pay until they reach the age of 60.
