About John, PhD, RN, CNP, CNS
Expertise
I am a board certified nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist in adult psychiatric and mental health nursing. Ask me questions about how to pick nursing as your second career at the basic and advanced levels of practice. And if you are a man interested in a career in nursing, I can give you my insights on that as well if you identify yourself as a male in your question. Attention students: I will not answer homework questions.
Experience At age 45, I decided to switch careers from engineering to psychiatric and mental health nursing. My journey and decision process can serve as an example to others trying to discern their call into a helping profession.
I am working as a psych NP for a community mental health center and also leading a team of case managers and registered nurses who visit our patients in their homes.

Subject: In between business and nursing
Question I am 28 and finally decided that I want to become a nurse in a hospital
setting. I currently have a high paying sales job that makes me miserable. I
have one year left of prerequisites at night in community college before I can
apply to nursing school. I am also the primary earner in my family. Are there
any nursing/hospital jobs I could work for a year while I transition? I have a
high school diploma, a BA from a good university and am looking to gain
insight into nursing before I start and just need to make enough money to
pay bills, car, etc. Please help! I want to do something for a living that I can
feel good about.
Thank you for your help,
Stephanie
Answer Stephanie,
Thanks for choosing me to answer your questions.
Yes, there are hospital jobs that you can do while you are in transition. I would suggest you contact a local hospital and talk to the nurse recruiter. Nurse recruiters will give you the straight scoop on what the options might be for you. Some hospitals will even pay your tuition for you.
Good luck!
John
