Question
Hello Violet,
I am a 50 year old acupuncturist with a Master of Science in Oriental Medicine, not having begun my first practice yet, and am thinking about applying to Vanderbilt University here in Nashville to become a Nurse Practitioner. Under their program, called a "Bridge" program, I would go 2 years to become an N.P.
 My questions are:
 1. Am I a little too old now for this type of program?
 2. Do female nurses or doctors look down on male nurses, or one's age? If so, is it quite a bit, or a rare thing?(I ask this because you may have been there and seen it in certain situations.)
3.Can one really start their own practice as an N.P.
 Thank you for any advise!

 Sincerely,

 Mike Eidson, LAc.

Answer
Mike I am very proud of you.  No your age will not be a factor with the nusing shortage you will be swept up. Yes in many states you can open your own practice.  There are many male nurses now and they are well loved.  Some think they are doctors and can be arrogant at times, as long as you remember your mossion as a nurse you will be loved and respected. God bless you.
