Careers: Photography/selling rights to sell photos to a customer

Question
Hi Don.  I recently took photos for an establishment.  I gave them a cd of digital photos but did make sure to write up a contract reiterating what there rights were.  I gave them the right to print or use the photos for advertising purposes not for monetary use.  They are now asking how much I would charge them for the rights to sell these photos.  My question is how to I decide what to charge them, how much and is this common. I would appreciate your advice.  Thank you

Answer
I would determine a fair price, add some extra for their trouble in selling your product. You've already received payment for the initial job, this is gravy. It is not an uncommon request. An alternative to them selling for you would be that they recommend you as the photographer, whoever wants to buy them then deals with you. You were right in limiting their rights, it's to their credit that they decided to contact you about selling the photographs. If they do sell, your name as the photographer should be featured prominently. That way you may get some additional work.
Good Luck. If I can help further, please let me know. I have been on vacation from Oct. 12-19. Thanks for writing.
Don
