AboutDon Wood Expertise I have been a professional photographer for 26 years. Wedding, portraits, passports, copies, groups pix, reunions, etc. Specialty in photography of large groups. I also have worked in newspaper photography for most of my photographic years. I have built and maintained a b/w darkroom, and a color darkroom.
Experience I have been a professional photographer for 35 years. I am transitioning to digital photography so I might be able to help in that field. Answer I think this is close to what is expected of a news photographer. You must be able to bring back a picture that will illustrate the story they are contemplating. You might have to take a portrait, sports event, sports team. Whatever the editor wants. Your salary will vary according to the market you're in. The larger cities will usually pay more than the smaller markets. You will probably get more with a state-wide audience newspaper than with the small town paper.
The more education you have the better. Education fosters the ability to work with people and that is what you want for the job you're doing. Most assuredly your education should include some business courses.
Related jobs might include portrait studio ownership. Bear in mind that we are in a down market, meaning that people may want your pictures but not at the expense of missing buying the groceries for the family, paying the rent, buying gas for your SUV, or etc, all will cut into your sales.
