Question
Do you need permission to photograph, say and airline, and then copyright that photo? I have been previously advised that permission is needed to take photos of their equipment and that the company would own the copyright as it is their image.

Answer
Hi Dan,

As always, I disclaim that I am not a lawyer :) Depending on where you are (public property, private property) you might need a location release which is permission from the company for you to be there on property taking photos.  You own the copyright to your photos unless you sell it or sign an agreement that gives it away.  They may have a patent on their product, but don't own the copyright to your photo.

Hope this helps,

Tricia
