Careers: Photography/Photography Jobs

Question
I just graduated college with a major in photography and a minor in business.  Although I love photography, I am not looking to own my own studio right now.  Do you have any suggestions for other careers or jobs I could pursue to say in the area of photography or maybe creative art? So far I'm looking into working for an advertising agency and a camera supply shop, any other suggestions? Thanks

Answer
Photography is something that lends itself to part-timers. Most activities (weddings etc) are on the weekends. You might look into being a newspaper photographer. The ad agency would be a good fit for you. You are in a position that many new photographers lack, a degree in photography and a minor in business. You have a good position for leap-frogging many of the newcomers starting out. Keep training your photographic eyes so that when you take the picture you'll have it right starting out. Make the procedure automatic so that you can focus on the most important element of the scene and make the picture stand out.Go to museums, both Art and Photographic and examine the pictures trying to determine what makes them stand out. Haunt the library reading the art and photo books and examining the pictures. If you see an interesting graphic in an ad, how could you duplicate it or give it that Jamie difference to make it outstanding. You will do this the rest of your life. I wish I could give further help but I don't know what area of the country you're in, large city or small, urban, suburban or rural. All will make a a difference in the decisions you will make as to your career. I do wish you luck in your endeavors to succeed in this crazy world.
Thanks for writing. If I can help further, please ask in the venue.

Experience

I have been a professional photographer for 35 years. I am transitioning to digital photography so I might be able to help in that field. I'm retired now but am still able to be helpful in the field. I have built a b/w, color darkroom, worked in a color lab, worked in the newspaper field both in darkroom and as a shooter.
