Careers: Photography/Camera Functions

Question
Do you by chance know if there is a program mode in most cameras for taking photos at different focal distances? I can do manual, but it seems like if the camera did it it would be more accurate. I am interested in using software to do photo stacking to gain a fully focused image, and for that I'm told using the most shallow exposure is best. Even with a tripod that would be a lot of photos to take adjusting the focus only slightly each time.

Answer
I am unaware of any software program or camera that would do what you desire. Seems to me that what you wish to do is not very much in the mainstream of what most photographers want, ergo, the manufacturers do not work on it. I wish I could help you more. Research the web, you may find it in the most expensive cameras.
