Question
Hi,
My name is Kiel Edson, and I am currently serving the tail end of my tour in the Marine Corps.  I have been seriously concidering photography as a career lately and would like to know what opportunities are availible.  What kinds of work can be done?  Is photojournalism the only real field for serious photographers?  How hard would it be to be freelance and/or sell my own photography?  I would just like some input.  I love photography, but have become discouraged trying to find legitimate jobs in the field.  Thank you.

Kiel Edson.

Answer
Photojournalism is one of photography's suits, advertising, calendar, group photography, weddings, portraits, are all using photography. Investigate schools of photography including correspondence. New York Institute of photography is such a correspondence school. It will give you some idea of what you're contemplating. Perhaps the Marine Corps would have a branch that requires photography. Investigate the various schools that specialize strictly in photography. Use your computer skills and conduct a search on Google for photography schools. One in California is outstanding, Brooks Institute of Photography is pricey but has a good reputation.
I congratulate you upon your work in the service. I was 4F in the period after HS so could never serve. I applaud your dedication to your country. Rest assured that you are in my thoughts and prayers for your continued success.
You are contemplating a field that is rapidly becoming digital so wherever you study include the digital learning as well. Not just the camera skills but the computer skills of editing your work.
Best of luck, please keep me posted. If I can help further please ask.

Experience

I have been a professional photographer for 35 years. I am transitioning to digital photography so I might be able to help in that field. I'm retired now but am still able to be helpful in the field. I have built a b/w, color darkroom, worked in a color lab, worked in the newspaper field both in darkroom and as a shooter.
