Careers: Photography/new career in photography

QuestionHi Tricia,
I'm 28 yrs old, and have recently developed an interest in photography (my husband is an aspiring photographer). I'd like to pursue photography as a career as I feel I have an artistic eye, but I'm not sure if going back to school (I have a BSc in something totally unrelated) will work out for me. I am, however, taking makeup artistry classes as my husband and I are planning to set up a photography business together and I'd thought adding makeup service would be a nice touch. But now I'm getting ambitious (or greedy and confused)!
I have thought of photographing food, kids and now I'm looking at fashion too. Do you think it's possible to pursue all three types of photography? I'd appreciate your suggestions and advice on how I should proceed!
Thanks!
AnswerWow, you sound like quite an ambitious person! Although I have a degree in photography, I don't think it is necessary for everyone to go to school to be a good photographer. However you should know the technical aspect of cameras and lighting in order to make consistently good photographs.(and keep them coming back for more!)
In larger cities like NY or LA, I find it best to really focus on one genre of photography and not generalize. In smaller markets you can be more of a generalist as there is not as much need for one type of photography. I also think focusing helps to push you photographically to make a statement, and allows people to think of you first when they have an appropriate job.
As for makeup, it an important part of commercial photography and can be a great living!
Hope this helps.
