Question
I am currently in my final year of a Law degree at Durham University and intend to go on to study the Bar Vocational Course once I graduate.  Upon completion of this I will be a Barrister and able to apply to a Chambers for professional training.  However, the Bar is notoriously difficult for anybody to break into and so I am looking for alternative careers, should I not make it as a Barrister.  The police has always been at the back of my mind as a career option and I was just wondering how viable a path it is and if my degree and training would aid me at all in my application?

Thank you,
Helen

Answer
Helen, with your background, I feel there are two possibilities for you if becoming a Barrister is not in the cards.  The first centers on the FBI.  Traditionally, a law degree is a plus for the agency, and it affords the applicant a good career path.  The second involves large police or sheriff's depts. that have legal sections that would fit your background nicely.  Give each some thought and pursue career options in each area.  I think you will be amazed at how many there are.  I wish you well.
