Question
Fantastic site! I have two questions: 1)How do I overcome the obstacle of being terminated at my first police department 8 years ago? 2) How do I overcome short employment periods?

I went back several years ago and spoke with the Mayor, HR Director, and City Attorney, none of which could find any  reason for my termination.  The SGT responsible for my termination had since been let go for lying and racial profiling and subsequently has went on to smaller and smaller departments.  The HR Director and City Attorney did purge my personell file and gave me letter that I left the city in good standing, however my termination still exists on the state level.  I also went on to another dept, however left after 9 months to help out with my mother, who was terminal in another state at the time, for a year and a half. She has since passed.  I have performance records from both departments indicating my top performing status, a letter of recommendation from my last Chief and City Manager. I was also a FTO at my last department and have a recommendation letter from one of my recruits.

I do have short employment periods since my return after assisting with my mother. Everything else bores me. Thank you for your time Sir.

Signed,
Missing the Law

Answer
Christopher:

Simple, really.  You do what you just did here with me, you tell the truth, and tell the agency to contact your old agency, who will give you a good rec.

Short employment periods aren't an issue if you can explain them, and I think you do that quite well.  A good department will look into this, understand it, and snap you back up.   You just have to keep trying!

Best of luck!

Jason
