Question
i just was woundering if there is any way that someone can tell me more about police officer, i always wanted to be one, and watch cops all the time, you can reach me anythime at 270-678-7603 or email me at puppylove5235@yahoo.com

Answer
Well I am not allowed to call you and I have to answer by this method.  I don't know how old you are but I am assuming that you are in high school?  You need to graduate with high grades, a near perfect attendance record, and a very good disciplinary record.  Then you need to go on to college and do well there.  In the meantime keep your traffic and criminal record spotless and when you turn 21 you will be old enough to apply for the position of police officer at whatever police department you choose.  You will be competing with many other candidates and there will be numerous interviews, an apptitude test, a physical exam, a thorough background investigation, and a polygraph exam.  At the end of all of this, assuming that you get through it, you are hired and you go to the police academy.  Presuming that you graduate you then become a police officer.

Don't let COPS be your only reason for becoming a police officer.  That is the worst thing that you can do or tell a recruiter.

Expertise

U.S.: I am an expert in this category for the purpose of giving young people an idea what the hiring process involves for the position of police officer. I am getting a flood of questions from young people who are being influenced by unrealistic television shows. I'd ask you to consider that when you watch police shows on television that they are NOT realistic and most of what you see does not happen in real life. Please do not ask me about potential jail sentences that you, your friends, or family might receive in court. There is no way for me to know that. I am NOT a probation officer so I cannot answer questions about probation and parole matters. I am a retired police officer with 26 years experience.I worked in a variety of assignments including investigations, homicide, sex crimes, runaway investigations, missing persons, and fraud.I also dealt with the general public during that time giving a wide range of advice on matters such as domestic disputes, problem solving, teenage problems, civil/criminal matters, and dealing with the mentally ill. I am available to give sound and reasonable advice which can solve most problems. Please do not ask me to do homework questions or online interviews. Young people should not rely on the Internet for interviews. Local police officers are normally very agreeable to assist students with interviews and surveys.
