Careers: Police - Army to Police Officer

Expert: Jim Pastore - 4/8/2008

Question
Dear Mr. Pastore,

First and foremost I would like to apologize if you have answered a question that is similar to this one. With that said, here is my question:

My husband enlisted with the Army, but is not being medically discharged because of a prior existing condition that we were unaware of, stemming from an injury in his adolescent years. He has always wanted to be a police officer and that is what he was planning on doing in the U.S. Army, but now we have hit this spot of bad luck.

Is it possible to become a police officer if you are discharged from the Army on medical grounds?

I am sure it will be more difficult, but I have been researching classes and things at our local JC, and I just want to have a better idea of whether I should get my hopes up or not.

Thank you so much for your time.

Warm Regards,

Kara Dorrell

Answer
Kara,

Without knowing what the previous medical condition it is difficult to say weather or not his discharge would hurt his chances of becoming a police officer. Just being medically discharged does not necessarily mean he would be disqualified to become a Police Officer. Sorry I could not be of more help at this time. If you have anymore questions feel free to write.

Jim
