Question
Mr. Payne,
I am currently deployed to Iraq, I will be returning at the end of the year & then in July 2009 I will be getting out of the Army to pursue a career in law enforcment. I would like to become a sheriff & one of the places I was looking is S.C. but all of the web sites I have found require me to actually be in state before I begin the process. Is there anything that I can start doing early to ensure that I already have the job instead of moving just to find out that I didn't get hired? I will have 5 years active duty time, 2 combat deployments with over 2 years spent deployed & I am an 11B Infantrymen. I have no college at this time I am currently trying to start correspondance courses though.

Answer
Michael,

Thanks for the question.

I don't know of any law enforcement agency that reserves an opening for someone. However, about 3-6 months from getting out of the Army, start your application process.

There are some places that require you be a resident of the state and a lot more that do not require that at the time of the application process. A very thorough background investigation and application process can take anywhere from 1 month to 5-6 months.

I know a lot of Sheriff's Departments in South Carolina do not require residency until the date of hire.

Try the following Web Site:  www.sccja.com  there will be links to a bunch of law enforcement agencies in South Carolina.

Best wishes, and good luck!
