Question
Hello Mr. Payne. My name is Edward. I'm currently serving my fourth year in the NAVY, and will be getting out within the next six months. I'm very interested in some of the specialty positions with the police force... Mainly SWAT. I know the requirements and job titles will be different from state to state, but from your knowledge, what are some of the physical requirements? You see, I'm not all that tall, but I'm in very good shape. I'm just a bit worried that there are certain aspects I won't meet. Thank you fro taking the time to read this, I'm sure you're a busy man.

Answer
Edward,

Thanks for the question, and thank you for your service to our country.

I am sure that there are probably some agencies that might have a height requirement, but probably not too many, if at all.

You need to definitely be in good cardiovascular condition, for running after suspects, or wrestling with someone that does not want to go to jail.

Good upper body strength to pull yourself over walls or climb over walls/fences, or to physically handle someone bigger than you.

Good eye sight for expert shooting skills and positive identification of potential targets.

Psychologically sound so that you can make life/death decisions in a split second, and to be correct when doing so.

Well, I hope this gets you started in the right direction. Google a bunch of police agencies, and a lot will tell you what some of the requirements will be for specialty units.

Good luck and best wishes!
