Question
Mr. Payne,

I recently worked for an employer where my primary responsibilities were to drive a company vehicle an take laborers to job sites out of town and then work with them until the project was completed and drive everybody back home.

My employment was terminated last Sunday and we were more than 300 miles from the Greenville, SC area.  I was told that I had two choices, either have a ticket purchased for a Greyhound bus back home and have it deducted from my pay or be driven back to Greenville and be charged $150.00 for the trip.  Is that legal?  Don't companies have to provide a safe return for their workers when they are sent out of town and not allowed to go in their personal vehicles?

Thanks!

Answer
James,

Thanks for the question.

It would be nice if they did something like that, but when terminated, they don't have to provide you with that kind of assistance, unless it is in some kind of contract you might have.

Take the bus, it is cheaper than what they want to charge.

Good luck and best wishes!
