Question
Hi Jason,
I really want to become a policewomen and I was just wondering if there is an age limit on joining the police as I'm 18 and was wondering if that would cause problems. Also I've been looking at police courses online and am not sure the best way to get into the police. I have Alevels grade A, B and C would that be enough? Also I have a son would the be help with childcare costs?

Answer
Hi Heather,

I am sorry no one answered your question faster. I saw it in the question pool and thought it would be nice if someone gave you and answer.

The minimum age to be a police officer in most states is 19, with some being 21. You would have to check with your states police standards board. In a lot of states that is called the POST (for police officer standards and training).

I highly suggest that you go to college and get at least a 2 year degree before applying to a police department. Most police departments these days require a 2 year or 4 year degree. If not to get hired most require it to get promoted. Plus trying to go to college once your hired is very difficult because of scheduling shifts.

The best way to get into the police force is to get your degree (in criminal justice or related topic would be a plus) and then apply to the departments you are interested in. Make sure that you keep a clean driving record and arrest record. Also no drug usage is a plus.

As for child care, again depending on where you live, some states offer child care assistance for single parents making certain incomes. You should check with your local children and families services. As for the police force helping, they normally do not. I have not heard of any offering any type of child care assistance, but you never know until you check.

I hope this helps answer your question, if you have more questions feel free to ask. I think its great that your thinking of police work as a career. Its very rewarding and your child will be very proud of you as they grow. My 9 year old son loves the fact his dad is a policeman.

Be well and good luck..
