Careers: Police/Domestic Assault

Question
In 2003 I had an incident with my wife and it ended with me leaving and her calling the police and pressing charges on me for throwing her to the floor. I was not convicted, but I received an ACD of on year and the charge was dismissed. I am currently pursuing a career as a Police Officer in New York. I have had other arrests in the past when I was in High School. But I am most concerned with the domestic. My wife and I are still married with two sons and doing great now. What I would like to know is if this will disqualify me from becoming a police officer/deputy sheriff.

Answer
Robert,

The sobering truth is that it could certainly disqualify you, will it though? It all really depends on what agency looks at you and what the state requirements are for police officer qualification in New York.

I would check with a local District Attorney or the State Attorney General on what the guidelines are for your state.

Good luck and best wishes!
