Question
I have a big question I seek an answer for. Does having a DUI on my record and having tried drugs once in college disqualify me automatically from being a police officer? I live out in California, and I am close to graduating college. I have figured out recently that law enforcement is what I want to do, notably Homicide investigations. I am troubled because I do have a DUI on my record, and have tried drugs in college. I am prepared to give honest answers during a background check, but want to know if I am eligible. Thank you for your time reading this, any information will be appreciated.

Answer
Broaden, there are no cut and dry answers to questions like yours.  A lot depends on how you explain the situation.  Some agencies may have a stricter hiring policy than others.  The fact that you are finishing college says a lot for who you are and your ability to follow through with something.  Try to emphasize the positive aspects of who you are yet be up front with your awareness that having a DUI on your record is not something of which you are proud. Sure, take responsibility for what you have done but make it clear and simple that you have set specific goals in your life and you want the chance to show that you are serious.

I`ve spent twenty-five years in law enforcement as a state trooper and deputy sheriff. Retired as a lead homicide investigator. My interest is in answering questions dealing with ethical and moral dilemmas facing officers in the field.
