Question I'm working on a novel and have run into a timeline issue. The victim's remains are skeletal by the time they're found (she's been in the ground a decade or so), and they're going to ID her using dental records (at least that's the plan). I'm trying to find out what the process/procedure is for identifying remains based on dental records. How long does this process take? As far as I'm aware, there's no national database similar to AFIS for teeth, so is this a matter of consulting with local dental offices or what? I very much appreciate any assistance you can provide.
Answer Hi Kathleen,
Dental ID works by having an idea of who it may be, and then contacting the family and learning who the dentist is. You have to have an idea of who it is to do that, your right in that there is no national data base, but there is one for missing persons, and dental records are a part of that when we have them.
If they have no idea who it is, then its calling the local PD's and finding out who is missing in the age bracket and comparing those dental records, which were given by the families.
Hope that helps. If you have any more feel free to ask.. I love helping writers, as I am one myself... :)
