Question
Hello Commander Wagoner, I will be starting the police academy at BCC this
upcoming October.  I am a bit of a heavy guy as I am about 30 lbs overweight
for my body range.  I have about 24 days till the academy starts and would
like to physically prepare myself for it.  I just started running, doing push ups
and sit ups trying to get myself ready.... What type of physical routine would
you recommend that would be most effective in helping me to prepare for
the PT portion of the academy?  Another step to my life dream of becoming a
police officer has come true and I have now been hired by a department, and
they are paying me through the academy, and I just do not want to get
weeded out of the academy for a PT reason.  Thank you for your time, and
any responses you may have to my question is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
John

Answer
Hi John,

Congratulations on your acceptance to the academy! BCC is where I went, you can see my class photo on the wall there, Class #80. :)

What you say your doing sounds about right, stick to the basics, calisthenics, jogging and most importantly, eating right. The exercises will do you little good if you keep eating the way you were that made you heavy. Watch your eating habits and make sure you really put what you can into the training.

This website is the US Army's for physical fitness, you may find some things on it that are helpful:

Good luck and be well... and say hi to the Director for me.

I have worked as a subject matter expert for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and helped to write the police curriculum for the State of Florida. I like answering questions about how to become a police officer, and questions about why did an officer do this or that type questions. I also like answering any questions you may have about police work in general. I do not mind helping with homework questions or trying to answer your questions about legal subjects that I have knowledge of. You will never know the answer until you ask! If you do ask a question, PLEASE take the time to at least rate the answer. I do not get paid to answer these questions and do it on my own time. If you ask, please rate it when I answer. Thanks!!!
