Hi, I'm 19 years old and currently in school for engineering. I want to be an engineer in the future but want a job in public service first and am considering being a police officer. My question is if it's possible to become a police officer without studying criminal justice?

Hi Ben,

Absolutely! You do not need to have a degree in criminal justice. Any degree is fine. Did you know that the degree the FBI and other federal agencies look for the most is accounting? :)

Also just a side note, have you thought of combining your engineering and criminal justice? Have you thought about looking into the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) crash investigation group? Or for the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration? They are the ones that look at accidents nationwide.

I am a Traffic Accident Reconstructionist from way back when and a lot of the guys that get into that are engineers also.

Just a few areas of thought for you that might be able to combine both your degree area and criminal justice.

I like answering questions about how to become a police officer, and questions about why did an officer do this or that type questions. I also like answering any questions you may have about police work in general. I do not mind helping with homework questions or trying to answer your questions about legal subjects that I have knowledge of. You will never know the answer until you ask! I am a 30+ year veteran police officer, I am currently the Police Academy Commander of an Academy in North FLorida. I have been training police officers since 1993 and have trained them in all aspects of law enforcement, including firearms, Driving and legal subjects including patrol techniques and others and training all over the world. I have trained over 5000 officers worldwide in the last 16 years of training.
