Question
I was just wondering the best way to interview a child of domestic violence? I am in school for policing and I have a report due! I understand that every situation is different with respect to a childs age and background and social developement. I have read many articles but a hands on prespective would be helpful. What are the main key factors that need to be concidered
Thanks

Answer
Natalie,

As you said, every situation is different. It's difficult for me to be specific. I usually try first to make the child feel comfortable with me and make him or her understand they are in no trouble. You have to understand that in most cases the suspects are the chilid's parents or parent. Even though they may have been abused, they are scared and usually still have love for them and naturally in some way want to protect them. You may mention that your trying to help the child and the suspect. This may help the child open up. I never went into an interview like that with any set questions. It all depended on the child, the circumstances and the severity of the injuries. Sorry I wasn't of more help. But hopefully this will give you some more ideas.
