Expert: Jim Pastore - 2/1/2009
QuestionQUESTION: I just turned 18 & I'm about 5'2 & attend adult school i will finish in about a year. when can I start the progress in becoming a sheriff && what are the steps?
ANSWER: Joana,
In most States you have to be 21 to become a Police Officer. So a lot depends on the State and City or County you want to work in. What are you attending school for? I would contact the local Departments to see what their requirements they have. A college degree is a plus also.
There are some Departments that give tests to become a candidate then most after that give a physiological exam and then a polygraph and physical agility test. If I can be of more help don't hesitate to ask.
Good Luck

QUESTION: Thank you so much I really apreciate it. My friend told me that there is this place were they train you so you can be ready for the academy would it be a god idea to go to it now && then later the academy? I attend adult school to get my high school diploma. I apreciate your help thank you
ANSWER: Joana,
I'm not what this school your referring to is. Check it out to be sure it's registered with the better business bureau and ask for references from people who graduated from there to see if it helped them. I'm saying this because I'm not sure of any type of school like that. Of course I don't know where you are at and all. I just don't want to see you get ripped off. The academy is a lot of physical exercise and then plenty of book work.
I will say though that being a Police Officer in my opinion is the a very rewarding career and if I had to do it over I'd do it again. Let me know if I can help more.

QUESTION: I live in lynwood california a real small city close next to compton. Im a pretty small woman && do whatever it takes to get into that academy is it true it takes about 10 years to be patroling on the streets?
AnswerJoana,
I'm not sure what you mean about 10 years patrolling? However I did look up the L.A. County Sheriff's Department. If you don't have the site I am sending it to you. I also see that they have a big push to hire female Deputies. Call the recruitment division at 1-800-233-7889. They will be able to answer any questions you may have and will also be able to tell you if there is any openings now that you may be able to apply for. Ask them about the school you were telling me about. I'm sure they can point you in the right direction. Sometimes it is better to go in person also. Call them and ask them if you can come in and speak with a recruiter. I'm sure that once you get your GED they can help you out. Just ask if there is anything else I can do for you. I'm glad to help out. :)
