Answer
Hello Crystal,
I admire you for thinking ahead, and being career oriented.
I would also like to invite you to read some prior Q&A on my page, concerning this subject.
For most law enforcement agencies, SWAT is a specialized sub division of uniform field services.
You'll need to get hired at the entry level position, which is usually that of a uniform patrol officer. Then, go through the academy, then field training with an FTO (field training officer) then on your own, where you'll want to distinguish yourself for future consideration to a specialized assignment.
You'll also need to be off rookie probation, which can last up to 2 years.
Then, I wouldn't expect a viable shot at a specialized assignment for 4-6 years, as the competition is brisk.
Once you are hired, you'll inherently be an "insider", which gives you access to what qualities the SWAT commander is looking for, and be mindful, that each opening is or may be different as to what the unit needs.
Even though SWAT members tend to be cross trained, there are still primary and secondary skill sets that are needed.
Some obvious ksa's (knowledge-skills-abilities) would include:
All the first aid certs, fitness....endurance and stamina...work hard on your upper body and hand strength, fire arms proficiency..pistols, shotguns, long bore, and special semi-auto weaponry. Also, chemical munitions.
All SWAT commanders are looking for disciplined and mature candidates, and those who have proven themselves abundantly at the entry level position.
You may be competing against officers that are alot more experienced in police work that you, along with those who are former military, special ops in the military, and possibly combat veterans.
When competing for a special assignment, it's all about who can pony up the most and best ksa's, attitude and character, coupled with experience.
And, you should know that for an officer to spend a large portion of their career in a special op like SWAT, is remote, for a variety of reasons.
My counsel, is to first focus on the big picture, i.e., a law enforcement career, of which, SWAT may or may not be a portion of.
Hope this is helpful.
Good Luck,
Regards,
loren
