Question
hello i have just finally agreed with myself i want to return to school for law enforcement and i am almost 28 yrs old and a single mother do you have any advice for me?

Answer
Brandi, the best advice is for you to try and get a four-year college education as most recruits have this as a starting point.  Is it absolutely critical?...No, but it enhances your chances.  As to what course of study...police science, criminal justice etc.   even psychology.  You will learn most of what is important at the police or sheriff's academies and when you are assigned to a patrol function with a training officer.  Selecting law enforcement for a career is good for one's future in that police pensions are quite good.  We are always encouraged to prepare for our retirement...what better way than to be able, in your case, to retire at about age fifty, or if you give the department five or so more years, a retirement check every month that will keep you quite comfortable.  Part of this plan would be to keep yourself morally, financially and otherwise straight, so there would be no skeletons in your closet to preclude your being accepted.  Good luck!

I`ve spent twenty-five years in law enforcement as a state trooper and deputy sheriff. Retired as a lead homicide investigator. My interest is in answering questions dealing with ethical and moral dilemmas facing officers in the field.
