Question
Can a Chief of Police (local govt. police department) hire his own son? The rational was that the City Manager was the person that hires and fires. I disagree, the Chief of Police makes the recommendation and is the person vested with discipline within the department

Thanks for the question.
If the city has no nepotism policy, there is probably not a whole lot that can be done. Is the chief smart in doing this? Not at all. I can see all kinds of ethical as well as other issues that could come up.
Let me just say that I am glad I do not work there.
