Careers: Police/Police Trainer

Question
Hello! My boyfriend has a lot of experience in martial arts and almost has his black belt. He likes teaching people and he wants to be a police trainer. Neither of us can really find a lot of information on that job, is there anything you could tell me about it? Like, does he have to be an officer first, or what kind of college, or the wages, anything, really? Thank you.

Answer
Jenn,

Thanks for the question.

Generally speaking, most police training is conducted by people that are all ready within the law enforcement field. However, there are individuals out there that have certain talents and abilities that law enforcement can use and learn from.

Your boyfriend, as a martial artists, can develop arrest techniques or tactics for police to use for self-defense or the defense of others. He might also offer law enforcement agencies this training. This could be a foot in the door for law enforcement employment.

I have not heard of anyone coming straight into law enforcement as a trainer without having first worked for several years as a patrolman or in some other capacity.

Good luck and best wishes!
