i am looking into becoming a police officer, well more then looking into i really want to be a police officer. i am 20 years old at the moment, and have taken time off after graduating from high school. would it benefit me to take police foundations in college, or would it be better for me to take something else (ie. business) just incase i don't get hired as a p.o

im really unsure about how to pursue this..so any suggestions would be helpful. thanks

Answer
Hello Smith,
It is difficult to respond to the limited information you convey in your question.
Without getting into prophecy, only you know what your true chances are on getting hired. Granted, most agencies hire slightly less than 10% of applicants, but even so, you can do a personal assessment on the basic criteria.
Some applicants won't be able to pass the entry exam, drug screen, emotional inventory, credit history etc. You would be wise, to consult with a recruiter at the agency or agencies you are interested in, and collect relevant information. Then, you'll be able to kind of see where you fit, given the requirements.
On education, it is wise to sit down with an academic adviser at the University or college that you are thinking about.
The subjects you take, don't have to be an either/or proposition, in terms of law enforcement, business or what ever.
Regardless of the field of study you head toward, the lower division undergraduate stuff is essentially the same. And the difference between a BS and a BA degree, is science/math, versus a foreign language.

My best counsel, is for you to take classes that have broad appeal, and utilitarian value in any field of study. Written and oral communication classes will serve you well in any field.
If you opt for a Community College, just make sure that all the classes you take, transfer to a four year program, usually at a University.
All the while, keep making applications to the agencies you are interested in, and that you qualify for.
Hope this is helpful to you.
Good Luck, and regards.
loren
