Question
Hello Mr. Payne,
I was wondering about me making it as an officer. I am a diabetic with bad eyesight (born this way, not because of the diabetes. Its good using contacts, but around 20/400 last time I checked) kind of color blind, and am told I am flat footed. I know it sounds like im a quadrapalegic trying to run a marathon, but I would really like to become a police officer, and hopefully SWAT on day. I know its reaching for the stars, but whats life for anyways? My diabetes is under good control, and like I said, my vision is good when corrected. My color blindness im not so sure about, since I can usually tell which color is what. And as fair as being flat footed, I don't see how that affects me. Anyways, I was just curious as to if you have ever heard of anyone like me on the force, and what my chances are of getting on. Any help is much appreciated.

Answer
Seth,

Thanks for the question.

I think your chances are as good as any one else.

I know police officers that are overweight, color blind, diabetic, prosthetic legs, completely blind in one eye, completely deaf in one ear and all of them are excellent police officers.

Don't sell yourself short.

Keep your record clean (no arrests), credit record good, and stay in reasonably good shape.

Good luck and best wishes!
