Question
I am a police officer with five years on the job in Sydney, Australia.  I am contemplating taking 12 months off work here to come over to Maryland and work. I would like to stay in the law enforcement field and realize that i cannot work in a police department as I'm not a US citizen. I was wondering if the academies over there would consider hiring a "civilian" with police experience and how one would go about it? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Tamara:

Actually, that's not entirely true.  Most agencies just require you to have a 'right to work' permit, some do require you to become a naturalized citizen however.

You might contact the Maryland Police and Correctional Training commission, located in Sykesville, Maryland, they have a full time academy there and sometimes hire full time instructors.   A simple google search for MPCTC or using the full title will locate their website.

 Best of luck!
