Question
I live in MD and was looking to become a police officer. I have tried at both county and state level, and pass their written and physical test in the top percentile. My problem is that I only have vision in one eye and they say to be an officer I need bilateral vision. Is there anything I can do or are my hopes of becoming an officer crushed. Any insight you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi Michael,
I am very sorry, but every agency I checked with, require bilateral vision. It is part of the fact of a police officers observation skills and duties. I am sorry, but I doubt very seriously you could become a street cop.
But what about all the other jobs related to law enforcement? Crime scene Tech, Public Safety Aide, dispatch? And a ton of others that are working closely there.
Your road may not lead you to be a cop, it may just make a slight curve to the left or right to a final destination.

I am a 30+ year veteran police officer, I am currently the Police Academy Commander of an Academy in North FLorida. I have been training police officers since 1993 and have trained them in all aspects of law enforcement, including firearms, Driving and legal subjects including patrol techniques and others and training all over the world. I have trained over 5000 officers worldwide in the last 16 years of training.
