Question
Hi, I have a few questions. 1) What are the age requirements. 2) I'm 17 and I have a GED, will that hinder me being able to volunteer for SWAT?

Answer
Hello Kyle,
The age requirements for most law enforcement agencies, is 21. For many federal agencies, you can't be over 37.
A GED is generally viewed with the same regard as a HS diploma.
But, it is like other competitive services: S/he who can pony up the best/most relevant KSA's (knowledge-skills-abilities) will tend to be favored.
Keep in mind, that SWAT is not an entity unto itself. SWAT units are usually a subdivision, of a subdivision of an agency. I know of no agency, that will not require you to first hire on at the entry level position...usually that of a uniform position. Then, you'll need to distinguish yourself at that position first, and be off probation, prior to being eligible for a specialized position. And, the competition for specialized assignments tend to be very spirited.
Hope this helps you. Good luck, and regards.
loren
