Thanks for taking the time to answer this.  I am 26.  When I was 20 I got caught with a small amount of marijuana and received a possession misdemeanor, which was dropped from my record about a year later.  I also have a misdemeanor theft conviction when I was 20, for stealing a camera valued under $300.  Is it still possible to become a police officer?  Since then I have completed college and haven't been in any trouble.  

I am also seriously thinking of joining the military.  If I had a successful 4 year enlistment would that help my chances of becoming a police officer?

Hi Bryan,

With your theft charge, police departments will have a hard time looking at you. I HIGHLY suggest the military time and that would give you all kinds of benefits and help in getting into law enforcement. In fact I would suggest Army Military Police, as that would be great on a resume to a department. But you may find you like it so much you decide to do your 20 with them. :)

I am a 30+ year veteran police officer, I am currently the Police Academy Commander of an Academy in North FLorida. I have been training police officers since 1993 and have trained them in all aspects of law enforcement, including firearms, Driving and legal subjects including patrol techniques and others and training all over the world. I have trained over 5000 officers worldwide in the last 16 years of training.
