Careers: Police/Medical Records Release

Question
Mr Payne, thank you for taking the time to volunteer your knowledge.

My question is in regards to the legality of requiring an applicant to sign a waiver for the release of medical records.  I am certain that medical records are protected by many state and federal statutes and laws and am concerned that if I refuse to sign the waiver I will not be considered for the position of entry level Police Officer.

I am in Idaho state and reside in the county of Kootenai.  Again, thank you for your service and time.

Answer
Aaron,

Thanks for the question.

Not sure why the police agency would need your old medical records. Most agencies will have you complete a physical & psychological examination as part of the hiring process. Your fitness for duty will then be determined. This may be the medical information they are requesting.

Good luck and best wishes!
