Careers: Police/Military background and LE and disqualification

Question
Hello, I was hoping someone that has some knowledge regarding joining the police force can assist me. Here's my issue; while in the CG Reserve, I failed a drug test for THC. It had been a really hard time in my life due to the death of my father and one evening I got drunk and ended up doing a really stupid thing like smoking. I am not a drug addict, just a guy who failed himself and his branch of service. My fear is that my DD214 discharge papers will revile that my discharge was for a drug related matter. I know I must be honest and open with my mistakes when going going through my background check. I just wasn't sure if this grave mistake would automatically disqualify me for any LE type of work?
Any input or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You!

Answer
Nick:

They will, as your discharge code will reflect the drug discharge.  You will have to disclose the discharge and the reason.  Needless to say you are NOT an ideal candidate for law enforcement at this time, with the preponderance of veterans who have combat experience coupled with good discharges and veterans preference in hiring.

It's not going to 'automatically' disqualify you from applying but it's not going to help your chances much.  If five years or more have passed since the discharge then you'll stand a better chance.  If not your chances are going to be extremely difficult to get hired.
