Question
Hello. i am 16 years old and when i am old enough i would like to go into the police force. i was just wondering what sort of school grades i would need and what sort of course would be best in college or university.

Answer
Hello Ms de LLoyd,
Typically, most city, county and state police agencies require only a GED or high school diploma.
Then, you need to take a written on "general knowledge" (which you might want to review some English, grammar and math materials) Actually, I think you can check the library and book stores for "police civil service tests, or entrance tests. These will give you an idea of they type, and depth of questions being asked.
You definitely want to sit down with your school career counselor, and discuss your career interests.
Now there are some local agencies that require some college, an AA degree or more. They are few, but I seem to recall there are some, like: Lakewood Colo, and a few in California, like Ventura.
The feds are different, depending on what agencies you are looking at.
I would say keep your GPA up, do some civic volunteer work, select some hobbies that may enhance your ksa's (knowledge-skills-abilities) You see Charlotte, it's about which candidate can pony up the best/most "stuff" that's relevant. You are selling your potential, to be an asset to that agency.
You might also consider applying for a part time civilian job at the agency you like. This would give you an insiders peek at your career choice...on the REAL, not TV.
You will also learn organization, subdivision and allocation of duties. Even look at their budget, to see how appropriations are divided among services.
It may also help you with seniority advantage, and help with college reimbursements. And, hey, earn some bucks along the way.
Stay in shape, keep your driving record pristine, don't get tangled up in a mountain of stupid debt., no drugs, or alcohol abuse.
During the hiring phase, they are looking for character maturity, decision making choices made, etc.
Clearly, be well groomed, appropriate for office appearance. The tattoos, piercing, purple hair et al may be fashionable, and not technically verboten, but they tend to not favor your prospects.
Hope this is helpful.
Good Luck,
and regards,
loren
